About This Project
Carving Culture is a project for my Design, Process, Context and Systems course. As a class, we were tasked to create a fictional exhibit for the Museum of Fine Arts with materials we find in the museum. I chose the theme of wood, focusing on furniture around the world. I wanted to emphasize the various craftsmanship and functionality of furniture/wood across continents.
For the poster, I took a lot of inspiration from the process rather than the final product of woodworking. With this, decided to combine analog and digital materials into my project. I had so much fun working with physical objects and incorporating them into the digital medium.
Development
Looking for items
I took a trip to the MFA for this project in order to gather items for my fictional exhibit. It was refreshing to go to the museum and focus on furniture rather than the obvious artworks.
Gaining Inspiration
Afterwards, we were tasked to create a formal exploration/mood board to convey our theme — mine was wood. These are the following first hand items that I came up with
Sketching it out
When tasked to create a poster, I felt that the tone would be strong for me to make use of physical objects. At the same time, the project called for us to make our own letterforms.

Crafting the poster
I turned my sketches into reality and made use of: card stock for the flowers, a carving set and carving block for the wood shreds, and a card stock that was patterned with wood for the letter form.
Making it digital
After creating the materials, I laid them out and took photos of it. I turned to Photoshop to unify the lighting of the photos, and to remove unnecessary objects. Then, I used InDesign to layout the poster itself
